I Am So Excited

“What was the last thing that got me excited?” I must admit there hasn’t been much to get me excited lately. Nevertheless, as soon as I read today’s prompt, my first thought went to Kamala Harris’s acceptance speech and the joyous reception it got from all those who were there to be a part of what could become one of this century’s most historic events.

I actually felt my adrenalin rising causing chills throughout my body and my heart to flutter. Mind you it was all in a good way. Most of the time when I hear the latest political news about my country, Canada, and that of so many other countries around the world, I am left with a sense of despair.

Kamala, as we have come to call her, has to be one of the bravest people on the planet to take on the job of winning over the confidence of her fellow Americans especially those who support her opponent. Somehow, she must gain the confidence of all of those who feel left out, such as those of colour, new immigrants, the poor and disadvantaged, the youth who are now able to vote, and those who have been so discouraged they have given up voting.

She faces huge challenges more crucial than anything her predecessors have. Never has there been a woman President of the US one of the most influential countries in the world. She will somehow have to address much of the mess that she has inherited from those before her. Let’s face it! Never have there been so many wars going on all over the world at the same time. Never has the world had to face a rapidly changing climate and how to deal with it. Never has our world been faced with having to change almost everything we have ever known, such as our past beliefs, old traumatic experiences, and outdated customs to name a few. We are being forced to make changes to our thinking and old habits so quickly. We can’t do it on our own so we need strong and open-minded leaders to help take us on this journey. It truely is boiling down to a matter of survival. I am feeling confident that Kamilla is the kind of leader we need: a beacon of light we will need to begin the process of making our world a better place to live in.

  1. Hi Betty,

Thanks for sending us your feelings about Kamilla’s run for president. We feel the same way. I personally would like to see women running every country in the world. I think there would be fewer wars, if any. Since I’m a pacifist, is there any worst country in the world (OK, probably Russia and China), for a pacifist to live in and have his tax money spent on killing people in all the ways the U.S. can help killing people!!!! That is the MAJOR reason why I have loved Canada since I was in college in the 1960s, and ever since. I am a dual citizen…..proud of one and totally ashamed of being the other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There have been some impressive women running countries in the past (England, Germany, Finland and Sweden to name a few. Those last 2 prime ministers (Finland & Sweden ) were/are in their 30s. If only we all could get “old men” magically out of running other countries and have all women running them all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We hope the weather there is starting to cool down and you can have a more relaxing fall.

    Take good care of yourself.

    Love, Jim

    • Hi Jim

Wow, you do feel very strongly about your country’s performance. Rightly so. However, sadly, I am beginning to see that Canada hasn’t been so wonderful either. More is being revealed about our past treatment of our Indigenous people, our people of colour, the LBQT’s (I know I haven’t got the correct letters but you know who I mean). It is coming to the point that anyone who disagrees with those in control are given some kind of disapproval rating. Speaking of the weather, all the predictions about the heat haven’t been nearly as bad as was forecasted, at least not in NS. We had one cloud burst causing some flooding in a few places back in July, but since then it’s been a nice mix of sun and showers and so far no hurricanes. It’s been quite pleasant causing a bumper crop of cucumbers and beans and less watering to worry about. Fingers are crossed that September and October will be as good.

Hope you and Sherry are well and flourishing after your surgeries.

  2. Hi Betty, It is so good to feel a little relief in the “not bad” news. It’s good news, even ! Thanks for your blog. But a little note from a critical eye, her name is Kamala, not Kamilla.

Are you back from visiting Melissa?

I’m being peaceful , doing some quiet mending on my deck. Other things are calling, but I will deal later.

    xo, Cathy

    • Thanks for pointing out my misspelling. Glad to hear you are enjoying your deck. It really has been wonderful weather and we were so lucky to have Ernesto take a hike out to sea. Will call you when I get back from Hlfx.
